5 Ways to Beat the Summer Heat in Arizona

Temperatures on summer days in Arizona can reach anywhere from 90º F to 120º F. But that doesn’t mean you have to stay indoors all summer long. With proper planning, you can still enjoy a wide range of outdoor activities in Arizona this summer. Of course, there are plenty of indoor options for those unbearably hot days as well. Here are some of our favorite ways to escape Arizona’s sweltering summer heat.

Five Ways to Keep Cool in the Arizona Summer Heat

1: Enjoy a Few Water Activities

One of the best ways to beat the heat this summer is to embrace water activities. Arizona has many beautiful and refreshing lakes and rivers to enjoy. Whether you prefer a leisurely dip or an exhilarating ride on a jet ski, spending time in the water is a great way to cool off and have some fun.

2: Go Outdoors in the Morning or Evenings

Between 10 am and 4 pm, the midday sun can be scorching and unforgiving in Arizona. But mornings and evenings are much cooler and more pleasant. So if you plan to do any outdoor activities like hiking, biking, or golfing, it’s best to plan your outing for the cooler hours of the day.

Morning and evening are also great times to witness breathtaking sunrises or sunsets over a gorgeous landscape. Plus, nighttime in the Arizona desert is stunning and can bring relief from an unbearably hot day. Stargazing, patio dining, outdoor concerts, and other outdoor evening activities are the perfect way to take advantage of those cooler nights.

3: Head for Higher Ground

Another way to deal with the summer heat is to head for higher elevations. Hiking, wildlife watching, and camping at higher elevations are all great ways to catch some cool mountain breezes and find relief from the summer heat. Consider taking a trip to the towering San Francisco Mountain range near Flagstaff or the majestic White Mountains of northeastern Arizona.

4: Have More Fun Indoors

Arizona also offers plenty of indoor destinations like museums, art galleries, shopping malls, and other air conditioned environments that can help you survive the summer heat. There are also various indoor water parks and aquatic centers where the whole family can cool off without worrying about wearing sunscreen.

5: Stay Hydrated, Dress Appropriately, and Wear Sunscreen

No matter which fun summer activities you indulge in, it’s crucial that you drink plenty of water and dress for the heat. Carry a reusable water bottle with you at all times, even in the car, and make sure to drink water regularly.

It’s also important to dress comfortably in light, breathable fabrics that wick away sweat. Being properly dressed and hydrated can help prevent serious heat-related illnesses. And don’t forget to apply sunscreen, especially during midday—it may not keep you cool, but it will keep you safe. Hats and sunglasses can provide even more protection from the sun.
