About - Phelps LaClair

The people behind

your peace of mind.

A focused team of Arizona estate planning attorneys and professionals — built on a tradition that began in 1980. Select anyone below to read their full bio.

The legacy

Four decades of doing one thing well.

founder

Stephen Phelps

Arizona native, practicing since 1980s.

founder

Stephen Phelps

An Arizona native, Stephen founded the firm in the early 1980s — preparing Living Trusts when hardly anyone knew what one was. Over 30 years of practice he helped thousands of families plan for the future, and those early trusts have stood the test of time.

Phelps LaClair began in the early 1980s, when Arizona native Stephen Phelps started preparing Living Trusts for clients at a time when hardly anyone knew what a Living Trust was.

Those early trusts have since withstood the test of time and served their families well. After Stephen retired in 2009, his son James Phelps and firm co-owner Jeffrey LaClair took up the tradition — now alongside a team of attorneys who share the same exclusive focus.

Today the firm carries that conviction forward: estate planning isn’t paperwork. It’s a promise to the families who rely on us.

OF Counsel

James Phelps

Arizona native, practicing since 1999.

founder

James Phelps

Stephen’s son, James took over the firm after his father retired in 2009 and carried the tradition forward for many years. He has since stepped back from active practice and now serves the firm in an of counsel capacity.

Why Phelps LaClair

What makes us different.

1

Focused exclusively on estate planning

No litigation, no divorces, no bankruptcies. Keeping our focus narrow lets us provide top-notch service — and design strategies that protect your loved ones, preserve your assets, and save on taxes.

2

We know what works after the fact

We don’t just design trusts on the front end — we’ve administered hundreds of trusts and estates after people pass away. That real-life perspective helps us avoid pitfalls less experienced planners never see coming.

3

A relationship firm, not document preparers

Much of what passes for estate planning today is little more than high-priced word processing. We take a personal approach to your goals, then commit to making sure your plan does what you actually want it to do.

4

Predictable, client-centered service

We work side-by-side with you to build a plan that meets your goals at fees that are predictable and fair — grounded in integrity, compassion, and a genuine, ongoing relationship.
