Phoenix, Arizona: How to Stay Safe in the Summer Heat

During the summertime in Phoenix, the temperatures can soar. The hottest temperature ever recorded in our fair city was on June 26, 1990. On that day, the thermometer peaked at a sweltering 122 degrees Fahrenheit! Although we haven’t yet topped that record high, we’ve come pretty close already this year. The summer heat can be dangerous in Arizona—here’s how to take care of yourself and keep your family safe.

How to Stay Safe in the Summer Heat When You Live in Arizona

The human body is made up of 55% to 60% water. So if we don’t keep our bodies hydrated, symptoms of heat exhaustion or heat stroke can quickly take hold. But besides staying hydrated, you’ll also need to avoid strenuous exercise, stay out of the sun if you can, and always check the temperature.

Here are some tips on how to stay safe and cool in the Arizona heat this summer:

1: In addition to checking the outside temperature, be mindful of the heat index as well. The heat index indicates what the temperature actually feels like.

2: Be aware that the elderly and the very young are more susceptible to heat stroke and dehydration. Plan to keep babies, small children, and older people inside with air conditioning. If you to need to take them outside, try to avoid the hottest times of day, and only go out for short amounts of time.

3: If you need to go outside, pace yourself. Refresh regularly by stepping into air-conditioned stores, drinking cold water, or dabbing your skin with a cool, wet cloth.

4: Wear lightweight, breathable clothing that is loose-fitting and light-colored (to better reflect the sunlight) as well as a broad-brimmed hat that shields your entire face and neck.

5: Drink plenty of water—more than you usually would—and avoid sugary beverages. You should also avoid caffeinated drinks that dehydrate, as well as alcohol, which can impair judgment.

6: Avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest part of the day—save it for early morning or cooler evenings.

7: NEVER leave an animal or person inside a vehicle for any length of time.

8: Even with the air conditioning on, try using fans to keep the air circulating indoors.

9: If you’re going outside for any length of time, use a sunscreen with a high SPF to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays.

10: To stay hydrated, your body needs electrolytes. Coconut water, Pedialyte, and sports drinks like Gatorade all have electrolytes, or try this sugar-free homemade recipe.
