10 Feb Ways to Give Back This Winter in Arizona
For many of us, it’s greatly rewarding to give back to our communities and pass along some of the good fortune we have. Winter in Arizona is a great time to volunteer for community service or help out those in need. From working with kids on their reading skills, to working in a soup kitchen, to maintaining hiking trails, there are many ways to donate your time this winter.
At Phelps LaClair, we’re always looking for ways to be more involved in our neighborhoods. Check out the list below to find an activity that fits your skills, or find even more volunteer opportunities at our local United Way.
Four Volunteer Opportunities in Phoenix
1: Share Your Therapy-Certified Pet with Kids
This volunteer opportunity is for therapy-certified animals and their owners who want to help children improve their reading skills in a non-threatening environment. Volunteers will work after school hours, typically from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm, Monday through Friday. The program offers kids the benefits of the human-animal connection, along with a supportive environment and enjoyable experience. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old and have a therapy-certified animal.
2: Help Maintain Trails with Arizona Trail Association
In honor of Women’s History Month, the Rock Work Trail Event on March 15 is exclusively for “women and femme-presenting people.” Trail maintenance in the Copper Corridor Region will focus on rock work to maintain paths, trail structure, tread reinforcement, and erosion mitigation. Wear appropriate gear and be prepared to hike up to 2.5 miles with tools! All tools and safety gear will be provided, and lunch will be included. Space is limited to five female participants, so be sure to reserve your spot! There are other opportunities throughout the year if this one doesn’t fit into your schedule/demographics.
3: Donate Items or Labor to the Welcome to America Project
The Welcome to America Project (WTAP) in Arizona is dedicated to assisting refugees and immigrants as they start new lives. By volunteering, you can help families transition into their new communities. If you have specific skills like handyman work you can volunteer your labor to help with home setups. If you have donations of new or gently used household items, clothing, toys, and furniture, those essentials are needed as well. Household goods like bedding, kitchenware, hygiene products, and clothing are the most requested items.
4: Volunteer with St. Vincent de Paul
With a wide range of volunteer opportunities for all ages and abilities, you’re sure to find a way to give back to your community at St. Vincent de Paul. This nonprofit organization supports individuals and families in need by offering food, shelter, medical care, and other essential services. As a volunteer you can organize a food drive and collect clothing, cook or serve dinner, host a birthday party, lead an art workshop, provide educational support to kids, or explore open listings to find the right opportunity for you!
