4 Free Fun Activities for Kids in Arizona

Get ready to mark your calendar—there are numerous free events or free admission days at many institutions in the greater Phoenix area. From theater performances to splash pads, there’s always a lot to do!

    1. Do you have a library card? The Phoenix Public Library has Culture Passes available for retirees that allow free access for two people to visit a museum or cultural institution—including the zoo! Check out current available passes here to start planning your excursion.
    2. Stroll around the Superstition Mountain Museum to spark your curious kids’ imaginations. 3. Keep cool by running through the free splash pads this summer at many parks throughout Phoenix.
    4. Check out the Phoenix Art Museum on Wednesdays from 3pm to 9pm, when they have pay-as-you-wish admission.

4 More Fun Activities to Enjoy with Your Grandchildren

1: Adventure with the Dinosaurs

With its wide range of activities and exhibits, Pangaea in Scottsdale is a great place for family outings. Pangaea features life-sized, animatronic dinosaurs that move and roar, creating a thrilling experience that feels like stepping back into the prehistoric era. Kids can climb around on a dinosaur-themed playground, pan for treasure in the “river,” build their own clay creations, and explore several dinosaur exhibits, from the Diplodocus to the Oviraptor.

2: Visit a Museum

The Verde Valley Archaeology Center and Museum provides a hands-on approach to learning about indigenous American tribes and the archaeology of the Verde Valley region. Exhibits include artifacts, interactive displays, and educational programs that make history engaging and accessible for all ages.

Entrance for children under 18 is free, and the entrance for seniors (65+) is only $5, making this visit very affordable! They also offer an excavation experience for children in the Kids Adventure Room. Appointments must be booked in advance—the Adventure Room is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10am to 2pm (cost is $20 per family).

3: Take Part in the Theatre

East Valley Children’s Theatre (EVCT) specializes in events geared toward children and families. Their performances range from classic stories and fairy tales to modern adaptations and original works. All of their plays are age-appropriate and tailored to be engaging for young audiences.

And don’t forget to check out their upcoming events. Along with performances, EVCT offers educational programs that help kids develop their acting skills, understand stagecraft, and gain self-confidence. Programs include classes, camps, workshops, master classes, performance troupes, playwriting festivals and contests, main stage productions, and more.

4: Ride the Train at McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park

The park features a charming miniature train that takes kids on a scenic ride around the park, giving them a taste of what it’s like to be a train conductor or passenger in a whimsical setting. Rides are $3 per person, and entry to the park is completely free. Check out the vintage carousel with your grandkids, too! And be sure to let them run off some steam on the playground.
