29 Apr Make a Difference! 5 Great Ways to Volunteer in Arizona
John F. Kennedy once said, “Every person can make a difference, and every person should try.” Here at Phelps LaClair, we couldn’t agree more, and what better time to learn how you can make a difference in our community than during National Volunteer Month. To give you a place to start, here is a list of five places to volunteer in Phoenix and the surrounding areas.
Volunteer Opportunities in Phoenix
1: City of Phoenix Volunteer Portal
One great way to become involved in the Phoenix community is through the city’s online volunteer portal. Phoenix residents can search for open volunteer positions with the city’s parks and libraries, senior programs, tutoring programs, and even the Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport. This site allows users to search for volunteer positions by the district using an interactive map, so you can find opportunities right in your neighborhood.
2: Nourish Phoenix
Since the 1980s, Nourish Phoenix (formerly known as ICM Food and Clothing Bank) has been providing food pantry and clothing closet, and job assistance for the working poor. This volunteer organization also offers classes in financial literacy, healthy eating, and how to dress for a job interview. Nourish Phoenix is always in need of volunteers to work in their food pantry, to greet individuals looking for aid, and to help sort and hang clothing donations.
3: Arizona Humane Society
The Arizona Humane Society works to save vulnerable animals and enrich the lives of pets and people throughout Maricopa County. This organization offers a variety of ways to help, from fostering animals or volunteering at adoption locations, to spending time with adoptable animals and working in their thrift stores. They even offer one-time volunteering opportunities to those who cannot make a weekly commitment, or you can volunteer to make items at home that will help support shelter pets.
4: Habitat for Humanity Central Arizona
If you like to work with your hands, then Habitat for Humanity Central Arizona might be the right fit for you. Since 1985, volunteers from this organization have built almost 1,200 homes for Arizona families in need. Check the nonprofit’s website for a full list of available volunteer opportunities in Phoenix and the surrounding communities. In addition to general construction, volunteers can also help out in the office and at Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore locations selling donated, reusable household items.
5: HandsOn Greater Phoenix
Not quite sure where you want to donate your time yet? HandsOn Greater Phoenix is a volunteer management organization that connects residents with nonprofits that need help. Through their online database, you can search for open volunteer positions by location and the type of charity, such as animal care, faith-based service, or hunger and homelessness prevention. Users may even search for volunteer positions based on when they can donate their time—weekdays, weekends, and specific times of the day.
